Trading card grading is the process of professionally evaluating a card's physical condition and assigning it a standardized grade. Understanding what graders look for can help collectors make better decisions about which cards to submit, how to store their collection, and what to expect from the grading process.
The Four Core Factors
Most professional grading evaluates four primary areas:
Centering — The alignment of the printed image relative to the card borders, measured on both the front and back. A well-centered card has even borders on all sides.
Corners — The condition of all four corners. Graders look for fraying, wear, bending, or rounding that occur over time through handling and storage.
Edges — The condition of all four edges. Chips, nicks, roughness, and edge wear are carefully evaluated, as edge damage is common and often overlooked by collectors.
Surface — The overall condition of the card face and back. This includes scratches, print defects, staining, loss of gloss, and any marks that affect the card's visual clarity.
Why Grading Matters
A professionally graded card provides a documented, standardized condition record that collectors, buyers, and sellers can trust. Grading protects value, supports authentication, and helps preserve the card's condition long term through encapsulation.
